Where " Tangled " Animators found their Inspiration for the Magical " Lanterns in the Night " Sequence
Two days ago Disney released new Tangled trailers, one of them is the "international" trailer. If you didn't watched them yet you'll find them below. Also, you may have heard that Walt Disney Animation Studios showed last week an almost finished "Tangled" to the press. And apparently most of the guests loved it, some even saying it deserves an Academy Award which is may be a bit exagerated... However, it seems that everyone was fascinated by one magical sequence, i.e the "lanterns" sequence with hundreds of lanterns flying in the sky.
I thought you would be interested to know where Disney animators found their inspiration for this sequence, but first i let you have a look to the scene in the Tangled trailers.
In the trailers you've seen just a few seconds of this lanterns scene but in the movie it'll be for sure a longer and fascinating sequence. And if i tell you that the sight of hundreds of paper lanterns flying in the sky is truly magical and memorable it's because i've seen it myself! And in real.
And where did I saw it, you ask? In South-East Asia. In Thailand, more precisely. You see, on New Year's Eve it's thousand of lanterns who fly high in the sky over the Andaman Sea. Thaïs people are there to help tourists to light the lanterns (and to sell them too, for a small amount of 3$) and if one day you come to Phuket for Christmas holidays it's something you must not miss.
Above two pictures shot in Phuket on Patong beach - you don't see well the people because it's nighttime but there was literally thousands of people on the beach, both flying lanterns and waiting for the New Year's Eve fireworks. And below, two short videos filmed by me which will show you these hundred of lanterns flying in the sky - in the video, all the white spots in the night are lanterns! On the second video, a big part of the New Year's Eve firework WITH the lanterns flying in the middle of it! These two videos are in HD and the firework itself, launched from almost everywhere all around Patong Bay is spectacular, so don't hesitate to watch the videos in full screen mode!
As you've probably understood by now these lanterns-flying-in-the-sky is a typical Asian tradition and, although you won't see this in Europe, it didn't stopped Disney animators to use the idea for this Tangled sequence, even if the story don't happen in Asia. After all, why not, and i'm sure this sequence will be magical in the movie. But at least you will know where the idea is coming from.

Now that DLP CEO revealed that DLP third gate might be a Marvel Super-Heroes park, let's see how could look a park in tribute to Marvel Universe ?
Yesterday's announcement by DLP CEO Philippe Gas in the Telegraph article that DLP's third park could be a Marvel super-heroes theme park was a clap of thunder in DLP fans community. And of course everyone is now talking about it. Some like the idea, others hate it, and if you want my opinion here it is: i think it could be a good idea for a land, even a big one, but not for a whole park.
But the good question is: how a Marvel theme park could look? Universal Islands of Adventure have indeed Marvel Super-Heroes Island, but it's just a land. The only full park project of a Marvel theme park was designed for Dubai, and not by WDI. The park was never built at Dubai but, still, i thought it could be interesting to have a look to this project, not perfect, but with good ideas, some of them could even be good enough to find a place in DLP's third park...if Disneyland Paris executives don't change their mind about the theme in the meantime. This third gate, as Philippe Gas said to the Telegraph is envisioned for 2020, may be a bit before if everything goes well with WDS extension.
So, late 2007, well before Disney acquired Marvel, United Arab Emirate-based Al Ahli Group and Marvel Entertainment, Inc. announced a partnership that will bring Marvel's full library of Super Heroes - including Spider-Man, Iron Man, The X-Men, Incredible Hulk, The Fantastic Four and Silver Surfer - to Dubai for a major new theme park destination being developed by AAG. The Marvel Super-Heroes theme park project was supposed to open in 2011 with an investment of over $1 billion USD but most of the Dubai World projects are now on hold....
The creative team who designed the park, in this case not WDI Imagineers but "great creative minds from around the globe" is based in Hollywood, Orlando and Dubai. When the project was announced the press release said that "New technology and unparalleled visitor experiences will be the hallmark of the theme park creating a new standard for theme parks around the world".
Thanks to Randy, a Disney and more faithful reader whom i thanks a lot, i've found some great artwork related to this theme park. All of the concept-arts below were designed by Chimera Design company who did a fantastic job as you will see. Unfortunately i don't have a lot of details about the rides but what we can see on the pictures give some indications.
Most of Marvel super-heroes will have their own attractions including the Fantastic Four, Hulk, Iron Man, X-Men, Silver Surfer and of course Spiderman in what will be probably a different ride than the Spiderman ride at Universal Islands of Adventure. Also, according to a a recent post of Brady Mac Donald of the L.A Times "Off-site testing has already begun on three of the planned attractions: "Flying with Spidey", "Fantasticar" and "X-Men: Danger Room".
The picture at the top shows the entrance of this Dubai Marvel park. Above, a night view and below the map of the park with the four lands "City of Super-Heroes", "Oasis of Magic", "Marvel's Mythic Mountain", "Nick Neighborhood" and "Crater Lake" at the center of the park. As you can see on the night view, many coasters were envisioned for this park.
Although it's strictly my own personal deduction, this next artwork shows very probably the "City of Super-Heroes" land - and yes, it's a Wow!
This next rendering is apparently showing the arrival in the "City"...
And, as we can check on the night view above this great building with the Fantastic Four logo is located at the entrance of the "City of Super-Heroes".
The artwork below shows a 3D (4D ?) movie attraction with all Marvel famous super-heroes.
This next artwork may show a show. Does someone identify who is the character in the center of the picture?
On the next artwork, obviously a Spiderman attraction - probably the one called "Flying with Spidey" - Spiderman is fighting with the Green Goblin and Dr Octopus. As we can see on the picture, the guests are not seated inside a vehicle (like IOA Spiderman ride). It could be a simulator attraction...or a free fall one like the Tower of Terror...or something totally new!
But in this next ride where we can see the Electro character, guests ARE seated in a vehicle which very probably is moving inside a decor - could it be an attraction using the same technique "decor+3D rear projection" like in the IOA Spiderman ride?
In other areas of the park - probably in the "Oasis of Magic" land - guests will find lush vegetation.
Even with my talent for deduction, i really can't guess what the next artwork is showing. Anyone can guess?
This next artwork, according to the night view and the park's map probably shows the entrance of the "Nick Neighborhood" land.
Below, the incredibly spectacular entrance of the "Stark Laboratories" and the Iron Man attraction. Another big Wow! A closer look reveals a "Rocket Jets"-like attraction and a coaster-like attraction on the top of it.
The artwork below might show a free fall attraction - or may be it's a new type of coaster designed by Mauher & Sohne - and it looks like it goes down right inside the water of Crater Lake! Is such a thing possible!?!
Yes, it is possible!.. as a roller coaster going under water already exist in Japan. The picture below looks similar with the idea for the ride above.
Although you must remember that what you've seen was NOT designed by WDI - so it was NOT renderings or a description of DLP's third theme park - i think that Chimera Design who designed all these concept-arts did a brilliant job and that it helps - even if it was not their goal - to envision how a Marvel Super-Heroes theme park might look.
However, as this park concept was obviously done some years ago in agreement or at the request of Marvel Inc AND considering that Disney now owns Marvel chances are that this park concept was in the "the pack" of the Disney-Marvel deal. In this case it would mean that what you saw today in this article might be, with a bit of luck, the concept which will serve as inspiration - or at least part of it - for DLP third park!
If Disney owns now this Marvel/Dubai project they could be tempted to use part of the concepts - and some are good - to save a lot of money in R&D - research and development. For instance, they could take the project to WDI and ask the Imagineers to be inspired by it...I'm doing pure prospective just for the pleasure but if you think about this on a corporate angle - i.e economically speaking - it perfectly makes sense...
Anyway, now all we have to do is to wait ten years or so to check if the Marvel Super-Heroes theme will be the final choice for DLP's third gate!
And you, what do you think, would you like to have at DLP a Marvel theme park looking like the one above?

Editor's Note: After DLP announcement yesterday of their will to build a 3rd theme park - not to be expected before at least ten years, see article below - we'll have a look today to a great WDI project that never was: Disney's America.
Also, i suggest you go back to yesterday's article about DLP's announcement as i did a new editing with concept-arts of the Villages Nature project and the big news of the day as Philippe Gas DLP's CEO revealed today that the 3rd park "could be" a Marvel super-heroes theme park!

The Disney's America theme park project
Today, i invite you to have a closer look to a Disney theme park project that never was: the legendary Disney's America project. Announced in 1993,it was supposed to occupy 1200 acres of a 3000 acre property in Prince William County, Virginia.
Bob Weis - who was at the head of Disney's America's creative development - defined it as "an ideal complement to visiting Washington's museums, monuments and national treasures" was supposed to be a park " that will be a venue for people of all ages, especially the young, to debate and discuss the future of our nation and to learn more about its past by living it". A place where guests "will be able to have rides, shows and interactive experiences that are both about the history of America, about America today and also give you a sense of America in the future. And he added: "In some ways the park is a timeline, we start in the mid-1860s and go backward or forward in time".
Great, but what kind of rides and shows guests would have enjoyed at Disney's America? Well, once they would have entered the park, guests would have found themselves in a detailed Civil War era village, the hub of "Disney's America.
From that point, guests would have discovered either "Native America" and explored the life of America's first inhabitants - including an accurate Native American village reflecting the tribes that were known in this part of the country. And also enjoyed interactive experiences, exhibits and arts and crafts, as well as an exciting white water river raft ride that would have gone all around the area, based on the legendary Lewis and Clark expedition.
Guests, then, would have discovered Presidents' Square, a celebration of the birth of democracy and those who fought to preserve it. The "Hall of presidents" of Walt Disney World would have moved to Disney's America.
A Civil War Fort would have plunged guests into a more turbulent time of American history, and adjacent to it, a big battlefield, where Civil War re-enactments and water battles between the Monitor and the Merrimac would have once again been fought.
Moving into the 20th century, guests would have entered a replica of the Ellis Island building, which acted as the gateway to America for many immigrants in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Guests would have lived the "immigrant experience" through music, ethnic foods, and a great live show presentation.
Enterprise, A factory town, would have highlighted American ingenuity where guests could have ridden a major attraction called Industrial Revolution, traveling on a roller coaster-type ride through a 19th-century landscape with heavy industry and blast furnaces. And, on either side of the coaster, would have been exhibits of famous American technology that have defined the american industry in the past, as well as new developments that would have defined future industries.
On Victory Field guests would have experienced what America's soldiers faced in the defense of freedom during the world wars. It would have been themed to resemble an air field with a series of hangars containing attractions based on America's military fight using virtual reality technology. The air field would have also served as an exhibit of airplanes from different periods, as well as for major flying exhibitions. Soarin' from Epcot and Disney's California Adventure is supposed to have been originally proposed for this area.
Another area, the State Fair, would have shown how - even during the big Depression of the '30s - Americans knew how to entertain themselves. With folk art exhibits and and exhibition baseball games, guests could also have enjoyed classic wooden thrill rides reminiscent of Coney Island.
Finally, in Family Farm, WDI imagineers would have recreated an authentic farm where guests could have had the opportunity to see different types of industries related to food production, in addition to hands-on experiences including milking cows and learning what homemade ice cream tastes like.
Mind you, all was not lost in this Disney's America project, as some of the concepts as you may have noticed were finally used in Disney's California Adventure. Jim Hill wrote an article about it, and you can read it HERE.
After the big battle between Disney and almost everybody living in Virginia, the project was cancelled. Disney's America would have been built near Civil War battlefields, shattering the solemnity of the area, perhaps causing damage to the historical properties and the location seems to have been the big mistake. However, in 1995 Disney envisioned to build it - guess where? - at Knott's Berry farm that the Knott's family tired to run their theme park wanted to sale. Jim Hill, again, wrote previously another good article describing what happened, and you can read it HERE
I know, this Disney's America project looks great and we all will miss it forever but years later Bob Weis, the WDI Imagineer who was in charge of the project's creative development, was back at WDI to supervise the new placemaking of Disney's California Adventure. As the original DCA took many of its inspirations from the Disney's America project, Bob Weis was indeed the best person to take care of DCA's future.

Disneyland Paris officially announces its will to build a third theme park - Edited 9/15 with more details and renderings
Disneyland Paris officially announced today that the agreement signed with the french government - which was supposed to end in 2017 - will be extend until 2030 as well as new investment with partners for an amount which could be as high as 8 Billion euros
AND their will to build a third theme park. This extension of the agreement will be signed this tuesday afternoon.
Before you get too excited about this official announcement, let's have a look to what this really means: First the whole site area will be extend from 1.943 to 2.230 hectares. The park will build in partnership with Pierre & Vacances Co a new leisure village called "Villages Nature of Val d'Europe", which is nothing new as it was announced many years ago but you'll be happy to know that these Villages will include a water park on which WDI Imagineers worked on the design - but no, it won't be, unfortunately, the original Lava Lagoon project. However it seems that the investment for this Village will be around 1.8 Billion euros, with first part delivered in 2015. Something else, and more new in the new convention talks about the building of 10000 housing as well as new infrastructures for this new area.
Edited 9/15: What will be the "Villages Nature"? Here is more about it from the Val d'Europe web site, including renderings. As you will see, for a big part, the Villages will be surrounded by water:
"Villages Nature is an ecotourism project, the concept of which is based on the search for harmony between Man and Nature. The first of its kind in Europe, this project could be adapted to each of the planet’s four elements (water, earth, air and fire). Developed over a 15 to 20-year period, its surface area would reach 530 hectares, of which only 10% would be built upon."
Below, the first Blue Sky concept-arts and master-plan of the project:
"A letter of intent for this project, which could ultimately generate up to 9,000 direct and indirect jobs, was signed on February 13th, 2007. Developed in partnership with the Pierre & Vacances Group, it aims to be exemplary in terms of reducing ecological footprints: waste management, water recycling, geothermal exploitation, car-free environment, use of sustainable materials and more."
"As the feasibility studies proceed, we find ourselves dreaming about the idea of enjoying a few days in one of the future Villages Nature ... an opportunity to breathe, recharge our batteries and expend our energy within the very depths of nature."
Below, a part of the latest master plan revealed in an official presentation of the project, June 25th 2010:
As you probably already understood they're talking here more about a huge real estate project than anything else. Still, they also confirmed their intention to build a third theme park but faithful Disney and more readers may have noticed that i've told you almost one year ago that the park was indeed working on a third gate with an opening envisioned at the end of the decade...if everything goes well.
Of course the main reason of this real estate project is to bring euros in the cash drawer, which the park needs desperately. In two words, they're probably making more money now out of the real estate operations than from the resort - i mean, at least in terms of profit on investment. Still, the park also announced that the resort is now the fifth hotel group in France and that DLRP is now making alone 6,4% of the whole french tourism earnings, which is not bad at all.
Edited 9/15: Just like you i would have prefer more details about this third theme park and they are coming today with this big news revealed today by The Telegraph and it's about what could be the theme of the third theme park! As the info is coming from Philippe Gas DLP's CEO himself this one can be considered as not a rumor, and guess what? the 3rd theme park could be a Marvel super-heroes park!:
"In the latest deal with the French government, the deadline by which Euro Disney would have to develop the land has been extended from 2017 to 2030, to provide the time needed to construct a third theme park.
Philippe Gas, the chief executive of Euro Disney, said one idea for a third park is "a superheroes park" following the acquisition of Marvel by Disney - although the construction of a third park is a long-term vision. Mr Gas said there is a possibility that a decision to build a third park could come as late as 2020, although it may come earlier if planned work on the Disney Studios park is completed."
As the 3rd park opening won't happen before ten years from now its concept and its theme may change. However, it's good to know "officially" that a third gate is always in DLP plans, let's just hope they will sell quickly as many as possible of the 10000 apartments as this should be helpful to finance the third theme park!
So, what is your opinion about having a Marvel super-heroes park at DLP? Let me know in the comments, and don't miss the part two of this article showing how could look a park in tribute to Marvel Super-Heroes!
Below, DLP's official corporate release about yesterday's agreement:
Renewed Momentum for the Partnership between Euro Disney and the French Public Parties - Signature of an Amendment to the Main Agreement of March 24, 1987
(Marne-la-Vallée, September 14, 2010) Euro Disney S.C.A. (the "Company"), parent company of Euro Disney Associés S.C.A, operator of Disneyland® Paris, announced that it will sign this afternoon an Amendment to the Main Agreement of March 24, 1987 which created Euro Disneyland in France (the "Main Agreement"), with the French State, the Ile-de-France Région, the Seine-et-Marne Département, and the Etablissement Public d’Aménagement de Marne-la-Vallée (the "Amendment").
This Amendment will represent a new phase in the existing partnership between the Euro Disney group (the "Group") and the French Public Parties that for the past twenty years has driven the development of sector IV of Marne-la-Vallée with Disneyland Paris, Europe’s number one tourist destination, as well as the urban and economic
hub of Val d’Europe.
The Amendment reinforces the ongoing significant and growing contributions of the Group to France’s draw as a tourist destination, as well as the creation of added value to the French economy, creation of both direct and indirect jobs, and to support the re-balancing of the Ile-de-France region toward the East, as was highlighted in the Economic Impact Study published in December 2009 by the French Inter-ministerial Delegate to the Euro Disney project.
This Amendment to the Main Agreement, which takes place in the context of a Project of General Interest (in French, Projet d’Intérêt Général), allows the signatories:
• To pursue the development of the tourist destination for hotel and theme park activity, including notably the right to build a third theme park in the long term thereby continuing to enhance the attractiveness of Disneyland Paris and reflecting its support of France as a leader in tourism.
• To pursue the urban development of Val d’Europe to facilitate a rebalancing of economic growth and job creation in the eastern part of the Ile-de-France region, which encompasses new housing development as envisioned by the Ile-de-France Region Planning (in French, Schéma Directeur de la Région Ile-de-France).
• To develop a new tourism project, “Les Villages Nature de Val d’Europe”, based on sustainable development. The project will be in partnership with the Pierre & Vacances Group via a joint venture that is a signatory to the Amendment. This project, which will be launched depending on market conditions, would be developed in phases up to approximately 500 hectares within a 20-year timeframe.
To facilitate the vision for future growth outlined by the Amendment, the perimeter of the Main Agreement has been modified from 1,943 to 2,230 hectares. Similarly, the parties have agreed to change the end date of the Main Agreement from 2017 to 2030. Between now and 2030, and as estimated by the French State projects within the new
perimeter could generate an approximate investment of € 8 billion by various tourist and urban developers, including € 1.8 billion for Les Villages Nature de Val d’Europe, most of which will be made by individual and/or institutional investors, and a potential of 70,000 directs and indirect jobs.
The Amendment establishes certain key principles for a balanced and sustainable development and commits the Public Parties to certain improvements and additional infrastructure in terms of road access and public transportation both within the land covered by the Main Agreement and elsewhere in Seine-et-Marne.
Philippe Gas, C.E.O. of Euro Disney S.A.S., stated “With this Amendment to the Main Agreement to be signed with the French public parties, we are renewing our collective confidence in the future of Disneyland Paris. For over twenty years, this model has brought sustained growth to the region, while ensuring a close relationship with our
public partners and neighbouring communities. We are committed to continue developing our tourist destination and supporting France’s tourism leadership, while addressing the challenges of sustainable development.”
If you're looking for a great gift to offer to anyone you love - including yourself - my "Disneyland Paris, From Sketch to Reality" book with its 320 pages and 750 pictures - including 250 renderings from Walt Disney Imagineering - would be a GREAT gift for any Disney fan! Hong Kong Disneyland announces its 2010 Halloween season, starring Maleficent as "The Mistress of All Evil" !
Hong Kong Disneyland did recently its press event for the upcoming Halloween season, and as always they announced a great and creepy Halloween, the kind we would like to have at DLP instead of the pumpkin men which seems to be there forever... So, here is the HKDL Halloween program with the help of the official press release and pictures.
Each year HKDL design a new Halloween and, after last year's Alien invasion in Tomorrowland, Maleficent seems to have a special treatment this year as she will be "the Mistress of All Evil", furious that she has never been invited to Disney’s Haunted Halloween. She is planning to unleash her darkest power and throw the hottest and most unexpected Halloween party ever. From September 16th to October 31st Maleficent will enchant HKDL Guests with new frightful fun scattered across the whole park.
As darkness continues to fall and the lights begin to dim, the Dark power will transform Main Street U.S.A. into Main Street U.S.A. Ghost Town. Ghosts from a forgotten era will roam aimlessly up and down the Street, haunting all who pass by. Without warning, when the music turns to a heart-throbbing beat, thrilling lights and mist fill the air, a Ghostly Gathering is invoked from every corner. Beware of the long forgotten townsfolk, who suddenly appear in the foggy darkness!
Under the evil power of Maleficent, Adventureland will become even more treacherous as the fog-filled Tribal Burial Ground is taken at night by demented zombies, deadly explorers, bedeviled tribal warriors and gatekeepers who will greet their Guests unexpectedly. To see and be seen, Guests can treat themselves with a Halloween makeover at the all new Boo-tique. From HK$250 up, HKDL professional make-up artists will transform Guests into the most haunting yet coolest spirits of the night!
Maleficent has even set Sleeping Beauty’s Castle aflame, where the brand new “Nightmare in the Sky” Pyrotechnics Show will be staged during Disney’s Haunted Halloween. “Hong Kong Disneyland will soon be starting its 5th anniversary celebration. Starting in September 2010, we will be filling a whole year with new surprises and experiences. We will bring a new and unexpected Disney’s Haunted Halloween to Guests this year. “Nightmare In The Sky” is the first time the Park has redesigned the pyrotechnics show for a seasonal program, in which lighting, music, high-definition digital projection and pyrotechnic coalesce perfectly,” said Frederick Chan, HKDL Director of Marketing. He added, "In addition, Guests who come in September may receive a special hologram viewer at the Park Entrance to enjoy the Pyrotechnics Show in a new perspective!"
The Only Halloween Themed Pyrotechnics Show in Hong Kong – Nightmare in the Sky
Maleficent’s curse has instigated the first ever Halloween pyrotechnics show in Hong Kong Disneyland called “Nightmare in the Sky” - Pyrotechnics Show as she unleashes her spirit on Sleeping Beauty’s Castle. Surrounded by her sinister laugh and ghostly music, Maleficent will conjure up her wicked magic and engulf the castle in thorns and flames, while she ignites the sky with a spooky pyrotechnics spectacular.
Jump into the Inferno Dance Party! To continue her take-over of Disney’s Haunted Halloween, Maleficent has invited some of her evil friends – Queen of Hearts from “Alice in the Wonderland” and the Hag from “Snow White” for the high-energy Inferno Dance Party where Guests can burn up the dance floor as a DJ rocks the party with a mash-up of retro chart-toppers and Halloween-themed hits.
Return of the Timeless Evil Power: Guests should be paying their utmost attention this year as Victoria Maxwell’s spirit continues to roam the Main Street Haunted Hotel, andthe ancient outpost in Adventureland is crazed with lost Adventurers in Demon Jungle.
