D&M Special : WDI Announces "Guardians of Galaxy - Mission : Breakout" Ride For Disney's California Adventure Tower of Terror
Well, i promised you that i will be back if there was anything big announced before i came back from Shanghai, sure i was that it shouldn't happen ...and i was wrong, as today at Comic Con Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige announced the rumored Guardians Of Galaxy "Mission Break-out" ride! So, i keep my promise and i'm back for a "D&M Special" article about this new GoG ride!
WDI Imagineer Joe Rhode tell us more about this new ride in the video below, a new attraction that will change forever the Tower of Terror ride at DCA, but here is the official release with renderings. And as you'll see on the one above showing the new exterior of the Tower of Terror some radical changes in its design will happen. which also mean for all Twilight Zone Tower of Terror fans that there probably will not be any turning back to the TOT in the future, i'm sorry to say... And now here is the press release, artworks and Joe Rhode presentation video:
Beginning in summer 2017, the outrageous and irreverent gang will appear in Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! – a comically high-energy, rocking new adventure. Guests will be right in the mix with characters from the blockbuster “Guardians of the Galaxy” films. Deep inside his fortress-like collection, the mysterious Taneleer Tivan (aka The Collector) is displaying his newest acquisitions, the Guardians of the Galaxy. They are trapped in customized display cases, suspended over a vast abyss. Unbeknownst to their unscrupulous captor, the intrepid Rocket has escaped and is enlisting the Collector’s VIP guests for help. Guests board a gantry lift, which launches them into a chaotic and hilarious adventure as they join Rocket in an attempt to break his fellow Guardians out of captivity.
The new attraction will anchor a broader universe of Super Heroes that will grow over time at Disney California Adventure park. This exciting new presence will transform the structure currently housing The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror™ (scheduled to close in early 2017) into an epic new adventure, enhancing the breathtaking free fall sensation with all-new visual and audio effects to create a variety of ride experiences. Guests will experience multiple random, unique ride profiles in which the rise and fall of the gantry lift will rock to the beat of music inspired by the film’s popular soundtrack.
Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! opens summer 2017 at Disney California Adventure park. And now, don't miss WDI Imagineer Joe Rhode presentation in the video below!

As long as they don't touch the one & true ToT in Florida, I don't care what they do to the low cost spin-off in DCA & WDS. And actually it looks quite exciting...
ReplyDeleteThis is a really bad idea.
ReplyDeleteThey have a timeless attraction that would still be relevant in 20 years time. They're going to completely change it for the sake of a movie tie in.
What a shame.
Lets hope this doesn't make it to the other towers.
I'm glad they're finally putting some serious Marvel attractions in at the Disneyland Resort (DCA).
ReplyDeleteXavier is right. The TOT that counts is in Florida. Anaheim's TOT is no classic. I say bring on Marvel! I'm looking forward to it.
This looks interesting – new concepts and major reinvestment usually does – and I'm sure Disney will knock it out of the park.
ReplyDeleteBut, at the same time, for some reason this reminds me of the weirdness of the 1990s / turn-of-the-century. Really strange, dumbed-down concepts / attractions that might be "popular" at the time, but with very little staying power. Rocket Rods, Superstar Limo, Ellen's Energy Adventure, Dinoland USA, Balzac Balloon Ball kiosks, Mickey's Sorcerer Hand on SE, Mickey's Sorcerer Hat at DHS, etc. Lowbrow concepts that don't necessarily seem like they should live in Disney parks.
I could go on, but overall, I guess the big question is: Is GoG really that big of a movie (or valuable / popular enough IP) that it deserves this level of commitment? I personally don't see it.
I hate to armchair Imagineer here, but: as it sits in Hollywood Land, right off of BV Street, it makes more sense remaining in it's current state, at least in concept. Fringe IP like this should not be shoved down the parks throat, since it will be regurgitated at some point in the near future, I would bet. Why not take that allotted capital and turn the ToT into another unique storyline – such as HK's Mystic Manor, or playing off of the Society of Explorers and Adventurers theme? And create new IP that way, keeping the theme consistent with the land where it resides?
Big Marvel properties I can see living out a long a healthy life, with their own attractions and possibly lands. Fringe IP within the Marvel Universe, not so much.
Disney is known for originality and premiere execution – would love to see more of it with the ToT remake.
I can't get on board with this idea. I don't think Joe rhode even believes this idea is a good one! I think the previous poster summed up the failures this project is looking to create! Disney spent so much money making DCA charming, the place Walt arrived when he came to Los Angeles! That hotel tower is a quintessential icon of the park that thematically iintegrates all the los Angeles landmarks that lead up to it! This feels cheap. It feels second tier. I have no problem with the Marvel universe coming to DCA, but wouldn't it have made more sense to leave Tot and incorporate marvel as part of a Hollywood studio creation of the super hero world, since there are so many! How does the trolley even make sense originating from this warehouse!? This is has been said before, but this is too reminiscent of the horrendous steam punk remodel of tomorrowland of '98! And that was dreadful and still lingering to this day!
ReplyDeleteI think it was about time Disney announced a big Marvel attraction for California Adventure, but this is a terrible idea IMO.
ReplyDeleteTOT is a very popular classic and it should stay the way it is. Thematically speaking, it will also not make much sense to have a big GOG themed tower at the end of Buena Vista street.
