Not-to-be Missed GQ Magazine Article / Interview of Johnny Depp

GQ magazine latest issue has a fantastic, not-to-be missed article / interview of Johnny Depp, unleashed and talking about the three years from hell he went through. Johnny also talks about Disney's now famous reaction when they saw the rushes of the first Pirates of Caribbean movie:

“Disney hated me. [They were] thinking of every way they could to get rid of me, to fire me. ‘Oh, we’re going to have to subtitle him.’ ‘We don’t understand Captain Jack Sparrow. What’s wrong with him?’ ‘What’s wrong with his arms?’ ‘Is he drunk?’ ‘Is he mentally fucking stupefied?’ ‘Is he gay?’”

I ask Depp directly: did Disney ask if Jack Sparrow was being played as openly homosexual in Pirates? “They asked me, ‘Is he gay?’ and I answered the question over the phone. It was a lady called Nina Jacobson from Disney at the time [Jacobson is herself gay, it should be noted, and has long campaigned for greater diversity within the all-male club of old Hollywood boardrooms] and she asked me a couple of questions and then said, ‘What is it, Johnny? Is he gay?’ My tendency, of course, is to be irreverent so I said, ‘Nina, didn’t you know all my characters are gay?’ That was a pretty abrupt end to the conversation. And I just continued shaping Jack the way I believed was best.”

Was Depp angry at Disney for its lack of vision? Its lack of trust? “No. I told them, ‘Look, you don’t like what I’m doing, fire me. You hired me to do a job and play the character and this is what I want to do.’ This is the work. I mean, hadn’t they seen any of the work I’d done previously? You might want to take a look at that before you hire a motherfucker, you know?”

Did he feel vindicated once it was clear his treatment for Jack was going to work, when audiences fell in love with him? “I knew I was right. Even the very first time when they came back to me saying, ‘No, no, what is this?’ it felt right. Even when the other actors were looking at me like I was an absolute menace, I stayed with it. I mean, the older actors were probably thinking, ‘Jesus Christ, he’s wrecked.’ Because I would tear up the script on set. I’d go rogue. I’d fly for a little bit to see where things went. And not everyone appreciates this way of working. Oliver Stone didn’t appreciate it when I changed all the lines he wrote for me in Platoon and that’s no doubt probably why most of my stuff ended up on the cutting-room floor.”

Definitely don't miss the full amazing GQ article HERE in which Johnny Depp even reveal that his front fee for Pirates 5, released last year, was an astounding $45 Million!

Johnny Depp will co-star in the 'Fantastic Beasts' Sequel, also makes a cameo in the first movie released on Nov. 18 !

Johnny Depp  will co-star in the 'Fantastic Beasts' Sequel, and Johnny also makes a cameo in the first movie released on Nov. 18!

From Hollywood Reporter: "The actor will make a cameo in the first installment, due out Nov. 18.
Johnny Depp had better start picking out a patronus.

The actor will co-star in the sequel to the upcoming Harry Potter spinoff film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

The first installment of the Warner Bros.' magical franchise is due out in theaters on Nov. 18 and stars Eddie Redmayne as magizoologist Newt Scamander, who is making his way to the Magical Congress of the United States of America in the 1920s when his magical beasts escape from his expanding briefcase.

Depp will be making a cameo in Fantastic Beasts, but his character is being kept under wraps so audiences will have to keep an eye out.

David Yates will return to the director's chair for the follow-up, which has already been dated for Nov. 16, 2018.

During a fan event earlier this month in Hollywood, J.K. Rowling made a surprise announcement that she has finished the plot for five films in the Fantastic Beast franchise. (The franchise was previously reported as a trilogy.)

The world of witchcraft and wizardry seems like a perfect fit for the actor who is known for such fantastical cinematic roles as Edward Scissorhands and Captain Jack Sparrow."

Update: Hypable has a source involved with the film who says Johnny Depp is playing the character named  Grindelwald. You won’t see his face in the first movie — just the back of his head. In fact, the below still depicts Depp in a recently released Fantastic Beasts preview. This shot above is supposed to appear at the very start of the movie, to be released Nov 18.

Always about Johnny, from Deadline: "Johnny Depp has signed with CAA, the agency announced this morning. This is a shocker, and an exceptional development on multiple levels starting with the fact that stars long tenured with one agency, who’ve carried billion-dollar franchises, don’t often move. Some will simply read this as a big “get” for CAA in a continuing rivalry with UTA that ratcheted up last year when nearly a dozen CAA agents jumped to UTA and took clients including Will Ferrell and rising star Chris Pratt. Others will see this as a star in a crisis moment making a course change after recent movies didn’t work, and a loud marital breakup cast him in an unflattering light in the tabloid cross hairs." Why "Into the Woods" Might Be Great, After All

I was not specially interested by "Into the Woods", this new Disney movie with a mix of famous fairy tales, even with a great cast including Johnny Depp playing the Wolf, and Meryl Streep a witch... Until today, when i saw this featurette in which i learned that in fact the movie is also a musical directed by Rob Marshall who directed the Academy Award winner "Chicago".

But there is more, as music and lyrics have been written by the great Stephen Sondheim! Stephen Sondheim is a genius, he is one of the greatest song writers of our time - if not THE greatest and THIS changes everything for Into the Woods which suddenly becomes much more exciting!

Have a look at this featurette which also include tons of new footage!

Marvel Wants Johnny Depp to Play Dr Strange in Dr Strange Movie

According to Latino Review - a web site with very good sources at Marvel and a great record of scoops in the past - Marvel wants Johnny Depp to play the role of Dr Strange in the live action adaptation movie! According to the website Depp already had a meeting with the guys at Marvel and is very interested in pursuing it. If we think at which Marvel super heroes would fit the most for Johnny Depp, Dr Strange is indeed a good choice and the fact that he is apparently a long time fan of Dr Strange should help to have him playing the role.

The deal is not signed yet and let's not forget that Johnny has to play first in Pirates of Caribbean 5. Also, Latino Review, says the script will have to go through an overhaul, especially since the current script centers on a 30 year old Dr Strange, and a see know Depp is now 50. This shouldn't be big problem and the movie if all works well should be released in 2016.

Imagineering Behind the Scenes Video of DHS "Legend of Captain Jack Sparrow" Attraction

Walt Disney Imagineering released an interesting "behind the scenes" video that will show you a bit more of the making of the new "Legend of Captain Jack Sparrow" attraction that opened recently at Disney Hollywood Studios.  First, for those of you who still wondered if it was the real Johnny Depp who is playing Jack Sparrow in the show, and of course it's him. But the non-believers have now a proof with these video shots while he was playing...

...or at the end of the filming when Johnny is standing for a souvenir photo with the Imagineers involved in the making of the show.

There is also another interesting shot in the video showing the WDI model which was done for this new walk-through attraction. Imagineers Jason Surrell, Laura mitchell, Charita Carter and Jason Roberts will also tell you more about its making in the video below!

Finally, for those of you who were out of home for Thanksgiving last week and might have missed my previous article explaining why this new DHS show might be also a kind of technical rehearsal for the projection techniques that WDI is supposed to use in the new POTC version at Shanghaî Disneyland, don't miss it you will find it HERE.

Shanghaî Disneyland Update : Is Disney Hollywood Studios "The Legend of Captain Jack Sparrow" a WDI Rehearsal for SDL Pirates of Caribbean Version ?

If you're a faithful Disney and more reader you probably remember that i've told you in previous posts that Shanghaî Disneyland Pirates of Caribbean attraction would be probably a very different version than the usual POTC rides. As i've also told you about a year ago i learned from one of my sources that the ride would not have a lot of audio-animatronics and mainly will use projection effects. And just like you i thought " a POTC ride without audio-animatronics, c'mon...?!?".

And then came Screamscape discover a new WDI patent called " “Amusement Park Ride With Underwater-Controlled Boats” which would allow WDI Imagineers to create “a boat ride with precise speed and orientation control”. Lance, from Screamscape, explained better than i could do the patent in his 5/21/12 post and said that with this new boat ride technology "not only the boats will be able to move forward and back, but the back of the boat will be on a second “track”, allowing for the back to speed up faster than the front, thus spinning the boat AROUND. Even better… the patent exposes another interesting use for this technology on the 4th page where it shows the boat turning sideways to rotate around a central “show scene” like the hands on a clock".

In two words, instead to have a POTC boat and guests always moving and looking forward, the boat will be able to turn at 90 degrees or more allowing multiple boats to look all together to a scene while they are slowly moving or eventually being stopped momentarily (see patent picture below).

Also interesting, the patent describes something that could be a kind of "simulation" system located under the boat which might allow the boat to move or shake suddenly depending of what's happening (see patent picture below).  For instance, if we look at a scene where a ship in front of us is firing its cannons the boats could be shaken just like if they've been hit by the cannonball in addition to water explosion effects.

Now, here is another important piece of the puzzle: as i've also told you before, one of the reason why this new POTC version would be themed around the film series and will not use concepts and scenes from the original ride is because the Chinese culture probably don't have the same romanticism of Pirates from Caribbean islands as we, occidental people, do. As a matter of fact most of the Chinese probably don't even know what happened in the Caribbean during the pirates years. They surely have a pirate culture, but it's of pirates of the China sea and not the Caribbean. That said, in terms of Disney pirates Chinese are aware of the feature film series which were distributed in China. I'm pretty sure that WDI Imagineers realized all this and thought that the best way to bring a POTC ride at Shanghaî Disneyland would be to themed the ride around the film series and i must say that it sounds logical, doesn't it? And because the ride storyline will be different this also explain why i was told that projection effects would be used more than the usual POTC audio-animatronics. As Lance, from Screamscape said: "after all, why spend the money to make a Captain Jack animatronic figure try to lip sync to a soundtrack when you can just film Johnny Depp himself performing as Captain Jack?"

All this sounds good but until recently we were still missing a part of the puzzle to be sure that a POTC ride using projections effects instead than Audio-Animatronics could "work". And then, last week-end, "The Legend of Captain Jack Sparrow" opened at Disney Hollywood Studios and one of my reader posted yesterday one of the most brilliant comment i've ever read, saying: "Looks like WDW paid for an installation of play test elements. It appears to be a show created from effects planned for Pirates of the Caribbean Shanghai. I presume mixing these video effects with the current attraction will give a good hint of what to expect in Shanghai. Video projections along with a boat that can turn in 360 degrees. I expect this is a cost cutting measure to reduce audio animatronic maintenance and to please Johnny Depp who has creative brand control over the Jack Sparrow character."

When i read his comment i thought "He's bloody right! How didn't thought about it before!". Of course he's right, and suddenly everything makes sense and all the pieces of the puzzle come together. Now, if you've seen already the posted videos of this new "Legend of Captain Jack Sparrow", you've seen that the show include different scenes - a skeleton scene, a mermaid scene, a Kraken scene and a final with captain Jack Sparrow itself.

The show itself without the pre-show last around nine minutes, but if you take each of these scenes individually they last around two minutes each. Which mean that if they were used in a ride it would request not only to have the boats being "stopped" momentarily to look at the scenes but also to "face" the scene. Obviously, considering the one or two minutes length, it wouldn't be possible to do it for each boat one by one. And it's there that the new WDI patent brings the last piece of the puzzle with the ability not only to have the boats turning to face a scene instead than looking forward but also to have multiple boats looking TOGETHER at the same scene, as you can see on the patent drawing above. Do you get it? Do you see how all the pieces of the puzzle come together? Sure, the "Legend of Captain Jack Sparrow" looks like a "C" ticket because you just stand in front of it and are not sit in a boat moving in real decors, but use the same high-tech projection technology with the same dazzling projection effects, put them in a boat ride with a boat moving in caverns or any kind of other decors, and add to the ride special effects (explosion, fire, water effects, etc...) and then you have something that will be a stunning "E" ticket ride. I know, some of you will miss the "all Audio-Animatronics version" but, c'mon, there is already four POTC versions in the world using the original Audio-Animatronics so may be it's time to have something different, isn't it?  I will end by saying that the irony in all this is that we are all waiting for Shanghaî Disneyland opening day to discover what this new POTC version using projections effects will look like when in fact we probably have it already in front of our own eyes at Disney Hollywood Studios without knowing it!

We're not totally done yet with Shanghai Disneyland as Luke from "Luke and the Temple of Fun" web site posted yesterday a leaked plan of what will be SDL night time entertainment and shopping area, a kind of "Downtown Disney" or DLP "Disney Village". You'll see the plan on Luke website but in the above official rendering released when SDL was officially announced, it's the area which is at the left of the entrance of the park, i.e the one below.

The new plan reveal that the total area will be 90550 sqm with 45315 sqm for the shopping and dining buildings and 31830 sam of ground floor area. Buildings will be high as 16.75 m or 23.85 m. More interesting, you can see on the map a big building reserved for "entertainment" which seems to indicate that there will be a show outside the park. Also, it seems that the park exits will lead directly to this shopping and dining area which for sure is a good idea on a business point of view. However, considering that people will be able to access the area without going in the park - like Disneyland guests can do with Downtown Disney - there is no doubt that this shopping and dining area will already have plenty of people who will come to share a bit of Disney magic without paying to get in the park. So, i hope that the streets of the area will be large enough as the fact that the park exits will force SDL guests to move inside this shopping and dining area will bring dozens of thousands guests from the park inside an area that might be already crowded...we'll see.

Also interesting, you'll see on the plan on Luke web site that the dining buildings are close to the park exit ( not bad when you want to move temporarily outside the park to have dinner ) and might allow people having dinner to see the firework in the park without being in the park itself. Finally, in the shopping buildings located on the bottom part of the plan you'll see one at the bottom which might be a World of Disney store as its size and the rounded shape at one corner might indicate a rotunda roof. You can check all this and the leaked plan on Luke web site HERE.

Okay, that's all for today about Shanghai Disneyland, let me know your thought about all this in the comments, and many thanks to the "anonymous" reader for his precious comment that gave me the needed insight for this article!

Legend Of Captain Jack Sparrow Now In Soft Opening At Disney Hollywood Studios

The awaited Legend Of Captain Jack Sparrow experience is now in soft opening at Disney Hollywood Studios Soundstage 4, and it looks pretty good. It's not a new POTC ride, it's mostly a show with both pirates props and projection effects but a syou will see on the video below it's pretty well done,

The show begin with a pre show and DHS guests meet a talking skull like the famous one in the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction. It introduces the show and will appear all along. Guests then enter inside the main show room filled with pirates skeletons and a replica of the Black Pearl. During the show guests will come face to face with a skeleton army, mermaids, Davy Jones, the Kraken and finally Captain Jack Sparrow himself, play of course by Johnny Depp, to defeat Davy Jones. According to those who have seen it already "the projections appear to literally fly off the screen along the back of the wall to over the Black Pearl and other objects inside the room".

It's always hard to judge on a video but the quality of the projections looks really good as well as the whole experience. They should add this at DLP Walt Disney Studios in the "backlot" area, it would be perfect and the former Backlot Express restaurant is now even partly themed with a POTC theme! Go ahead and watch the video in full screen mode!

The video below was shot by the good guys of Inside the Magic, so after you watched it be kind enough to visit their site where you'll see more pictures of the show. And by the way, talking about pictures, the picture on the top is in wallpaper size!

The Lone Ranger Filming " Almost a Wrap "

It's Jerry Bruckheimer himself who announces it on his blog: The Lone Ranger filming is "almost a wrap", which means that they've almost finished the shooting and that the movie will enter soon in post-production.

However there is another great news as some of The Lone Ranger scenes were filmed recently at the legendary Monument Valley, in Utah. Monument Valley became famous thanks to John Ford who found in love with its gorgeous scenery and filmed there many of his most famous western movies. It's difficult to think about another place more emblematic of westerns than Monument Valley. At the instant you see Monument Valley in a movie it makes you think to cowboys and indians chasing one each other. I love Monument Valley and thinking that scenes of the Lone Ranger were filmed there is one more good reason for me to see the movie when it will be released next year!

Anyone else here loving Monument Valley?

The Lone Ranger First Picture !

Disney released the very first picture from The Lone Ranger movie, and it's the one you can see above with johnny Depp playing Tonto. As it is said in Disney press release “The Lone Ranger is a thrilling adventure infused with action and humor, in which the famed masked hero is brought to life through new eyes. Native American spirit warrior Tonto (Johnny Depp) recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid (Armie Hammer), a man of the law, into a legend of justice — taking the audience on a runaway train of epic surprises and humorous friction as the two unlikely heroes must learn to work together and fight against greed and corruption".

Rumors say that the original script ha supernatural creatures from native american myths and i wish that this is true as they can do great things (and scenes) with this. Also, according to sources who have read recent drafts, three massive action set pieces involving trains remain, including one described as the biggest train sequence in film history. To be honest, first, i was not very interested by this Lone Ranger movie, but the more i know about it the more i have a good feeling. And of course, as usual, it's the character play by Johnny - and how he will play it - who is getting the most of my attention.

As Johnny said in an interview to entertainment weekly: “I remember watching it as a kid, with Jay Silverheels and Clayton Moore, and going: ‘Why is the f—ing Lone Ranger telling Tonto what to do?’” Depp told EW last year, recalling the 1949-1957 TV show, which was seen for many more decades in reruns. “I liked Tonto, even at that tender age, and knew Tonto was getting the unpleasant end of the stick here. That’s stuck with me.”When the idea came up to do a new movie, Depp saw a way to right what he considered a pop culture wrong. “I started thinking about Tonto and what could be done in my own small way to… ” he hesitated. “Eliminate’ isn’t possible — but reinvent the relationship, to attempt to take some of the ugliness thrown on the Native Americans, not only in The Lone Ranger, but the way Indians were treated throughout history of cinema, and turn it on its head.”

I, personally, wonder if one of the reasons that Johnny was interested in playing Tonto is his native americans origin? Although the Depp family in the United States began with a French Huguenot immigrant, Pierre Deppe or Dieppe who settled in Virginia around 1700 part of a refugee colony situated above the falls on the James River Johnny has also surmised that he is part Native American, saying in 2011, "I guess I have some Native American [in me] somewhere down the line. My great-grandmother was quite a bit of Native American, she grew up Cherokee or maybe Creek Indian. Makes sense in terms of coming from Kentucky, which is rife with Cherokee and Creek." Interesting, isn't it? The movie is scheduled to be released on May 31, 2013, and no doubt that new pictures will be released until then.

Pirates of Caribbean "On Stranger Tides" Review

I was invited last monday at the press screening of Pirates of Caribbean "On Stranger Tides" and here is my review. So, did i liked it? Yes i did - not as much as the first POTC movie, though, but i think it was pretty good. I specially enjoyed the Rob Marshall filming that i found a bit more "stylised" than the three first movies. I will try to don't spoil in this review the whole story but i warn you that there will be some inevitable spoilers below.

What i can say is that the storyline is a bit like "Treasure Island" - a group of people are sailing overseas to find an island - except that in this case they are "three" groups who don't look for an island with a treasure but with the fountain of youth. Which, i agree, is a different kind of "treasure".

I liked very much the beginning in London - an old 18th century London to be precise. Captain Jack Sparrow try to help one of his friend to escape...only to discover that someone else is using his name to enroll sailors for a long trip overseas. However Jack is captured and it's in this opening sequence that we also see the return of Barbossa, played by Geoffrey Rush. Below, a short clip of Jack's escape in London in front of the king of England.

The trip to the fountain of youth island will not be that easy, specially considering that they need to capture a mermaid for a reason i don't disclose here. The mermaids sequence is one of my favorites and i think they did a pretty good job on this one. More adventures awaits Jack and his friends before they arrive at the fountain of youth and i let you the pleasure to discover them.

About the actors, now. Johnny Depp is playing Jack Sparrow just like the filming didn't stopped since the third movie, but there is nothing really surprising in the way he plays it. Ian McShane is playing a dreadful Blackbeard - who is able to create zombies - and is very good, and Geoffrey Rush playing Barbossa is absolutely formidable. But Geoffrey is such a great and enjoyable actor that each scene he's in is saved by the way he acts. Penelope Cruz is not bad at all, actually. She is Blackbeard's daughter and she is doing a good job, just like Astrid Berges-Frisbey who plays one of the mermaids.

There is less supernatural elements than in the three previous POTC movies - the part with the zombies is very short - but the production of the movie is really good. Actually, they even succeed to place a scene from the POTC attraction, and it's the one that DLP guests can see at the end of the ride when you're in the treasure grotto scene. Just in front of the treasure there is the "captain cabin" scene with a skeleton sitting in an old luxurious bed, and you will see the same scene inside the Ponce de Leon ship, a spaniard ship who disappeared since 200 years and that everyone is looking for for reasons you will see in the movie.

This next video will show you some scenes with Blackbeard and also the zombies and the mermaids.

A few last words about the 3D. As usual 3D is used to give some depth and there is just a few pop-up effects, but not mre than five or six. Personnally i think that in this case the 3D, although well done, doesn't brings a lot to the movie and i even think that i would have prefered to watch it in 2D. If you can't see it in 3D, don't worry, you won't miss a lot.

Just let us know in the comments what you think of this Pirates of Caribbean "On Stranger Tides"!
