It's Walt Disney World 38th anniversary !

Thirty eight years ago, on October 1st, 1971, Walt Disney world - Walt's big dream - was opening. LIFE photographers were there and the magazine did a special issue two weeks later, on October 15. You can read the whole article on Google Books and here is the LIFE memorable cover as well as the original picture from the photo shoot with 1500 WDW cast-members and characters!

38 years wow! When the park opened I was just months away from starting at WED and working on all the additional shows and attractions that would come. I'm sure Walt is beaming down.

I agree - 38 years years, wow!

My family lived in southern Florida in the '70s, and we camped at the park for a week during the 4th of July Bicentennial celebration in 1976.

I also remember visiting a "preview center" built near the unfinished WDW, probably in late '70 or early '71. I believe there were some models and concept drawings on display, as well as some topiary bushes outside.

Unfortunately, the details are a bit sketchy for me, as I was all of 3 years old at the time.
