The Day DLP's Sleeping Beauty Castle was Unveiled

I know you're all waiting for my DLP update and 20th Anniversary news. You should have it probably at the end of this week. In the meantime we'll go back in time with this video shot at DLP 20 years ago.

On October 12, 1991, a special event was organized at DLP with Michael Eisney, Roy Disney, Robert Fitzpatrick - who was DLP first CEO - and the first EuroDisneyland Ambassador to unveil Sleeping Beauty Castle. You'll note that Main Street U.S.A buildings are still under construction and most of them were not even painted yet. It was still the time of innocence for the park, long before the financial problems that happened later, and that's part of the reason why this video have its charm.

It's funny to hear their accents!

This castle is the most beautiful in my opinion, and the most elaborate with the cavern and the dragon underneath, the stained glass panels, the store where they make glass statues in front of the public...

It's a pity that Disney chose to reproduce the American castles in the Asian resorts, instead of designing new ones.

Although I've never had a chance to visit any of the parks outside the US, I have been enchanted by Paris' since I first saw it on the cover of the Disney Company annual report.

It would have been nice for Disney to design unique castles for their parks. I have read that OLC actually wanted a clone of WDW's castle, although I'm not sure if that is true, yet there was no excuse for Hong Kong, although one could say a mini-park deserves a mini-castle. Let's hope that Shanghai gives Disney incentive to design something as spectacular as Paris.

I like the Anaheim castle very much, even tough it is very small, but it should not have been reproduced in my opinion, it just shows that there is not that much imagination left in the world...
