Mickey's PhilharMagic Opens at Disneyland Paris Discoveryland in a Low-Cost Version

Hello everyone, here is D&M report of Mickey's PhilharMagic which opened at Disneyland Paris Discoveryland Theatre as a new attraction, with pictures thanks to Max, D&M contributor and DLP Welcome webmaster. The attraction, announced as a new one by Daniel Delcourt of Disneyland Paris, had a soft opening for Annual Passholders this last weekend and opened to all visitors yesterday Monday October 1st. Actually, more than the "full" attraction beloved in the U.S or at HKDL and TDL it’s just a new movie. After Captain EO, Honey, I Shrunk The Audience, Ant-Man, Star Wars Path of the Jedi, Pixar short Film Festival… it is now the turn of Mickey’s Philharmagic to be presented inside Discoveryland Theater.

Among the many elements which were hints that a simple change of film would only take place, we had: Hint 1 – The location of the attraction: this attraction has always been built in Fantasyland whether it was at Hong Kong Disneyland, Tokyo Disneyland or WDW Magic Kingdom. The opening in Discoveryland at Disneyland Paris is a total nonsense in regards to the story and theme of the land. So DLP guests will go from an attraction like Space Mountain or Star Tours, to Donald meeting the Little Mermaid. There’s a problem, obviously, but the reason why DLP open it here is because they don't have a theatre at Fantasyland. DLP has plans to build one since years - if i remember well in the area between Fantasyland and Discoveryland - but unfortunately Disney never gave them the funds to DLP to build it, so...

Below, the entrance of Mickey's PhilharMagic at Disneyland Paris - with the X-Wing fighter of Star Tours in the background...

...and Mickey's PhilharMagic theatre at Hong Kong Disneyland Fantasyland:

Hint 2 – The Lack of building permit: Indeed, if the theater had to be adapted for the attraction, a building permit that could be seen by anyone at Chessy town hall would have been required to modify some elements inside the theatre, such as emergency exits that would have been blocked by a larger screen. I remind you that the attraction normally have a hemispherical screen of at least 120 ° to immerse the viewers. This screen put the visitors right into the action instead of a simple projection on a flat screen. But to have it at DLP, it would have mean that a new screen had to cover the first entrance/exit doors on the left and right sides of the theatre and also partly on the first row of the seats. So basically, the theatre needed be transformed a bit for this attraction.

On the blueprint below the screen (in blue) in Mickey’s Philharmagic at WDW Magic Kingdom.

Hint 3 – Lack of marketing from the park: If some are surprised to see no advertising on social medias, TV commercials or even Ads in the Parisian Metro, that is not surprising. DLP knowing that it is only a new film, could not launch a marketing campaign on a "new attraction" that is not really "totally" one. Instead, the park kept the usual small communication about the Halloween season, because Halloween or even the coming Christmas season have much more impact.

Hint 4 – Unchanged exterior : Again, it’s the same pattern, the only thing visible is the presence of printed banners. Minimal expense, zero integration.

To the unchanged exteriors, we can add the pre-show and the theatre itself which also have no changes. No investment have been done to immerse the visitor into the show storyline. There is still some in-theatre effects during the film, mainly wind and water spray as well as the floor moving a bit but let's not talk about the lack of the Donald Audio-Animatronic normally appearing in the back of the theatre at the end of the film.

Disneyland Paris : Pre-show room and theatre.

Tokyo Disneyland pre-show room and theatre. See the difference?

So, globally speaking it is a feeling of disappointment that Disney parks fans will probably have when they'll see an attraction that does not deserve this, a kind of low cost Mickey’s PhilharMagic, in comparison to all the others versions in Disney theme parks. This is a new try from DLP in the hope to bring visitors to this part of the park but to see an attraction so well designed for its Asian versions being presented in France that way gives the feeling that « Mickey's PhilharMagic » is sacrificed because Disneyland Paris needed to broaden its offer for the arrival of the winter with an investment as little as possible. Another chance missed by Disneyland Paris, and it's a pity as children and even adults usually love this attraction, normally a solid "D" ticket. They still will like it, but it could have been so much better.

On the video below, you'll see that, because they couldn't enlarge the screen, the film itself is reduced. In the real version the movie starts with a kind of 4:3 format of the image and then goes up to a large "Cinemascope" 2:85 format, if not wider.  Here, the beginning has been reduced - so you better sit in the front rows as from the back of the theatre it will look small - and then the image format gets bigger but stay in the limits of the regular screen of Discoveryland theatre. Basically they needed to put a 2:85 format in a 16:9 screen... Also, in the full version of the attraction there is curtains on the left and right which, after the opening sequence, move to unveil the giant screen. Here there is IN the movie an image of  curtains which move visually to give the illusion of real curtains when the format is changing! Want one more for the road? Normally there is a decor element which goes up and disappear in the theatre ceiling - the one in yellow/orange color on the above picture - and in the DLP version it has purely and simply disappeared as they couldn't make the effect. By the way, this decor element moving up is also the reason why they never open Mickey's PhilharMagic at DLP WDS Toon Studios where it could have found its place naturally, inside the Animagique theatre. Years ago, DLP Imagineers have thought to put it there but the problem was that the Animagique theatre is not really a theatre, it's not one with four vertical walls and a ceiling so there was no way to have the decor element disappearing in the ceiling as there is no real ceiling...

Disneyland Paris Update: Hyperspace Mountain Open at DLP Discoveryland - Full Ride Videos !

Disneyland Paris Hyperspace Mountain opened this week-end at Discoveryland and here below is a selection of videos from Max / DLP Welcome , DLP official and ED92. And below, some new pictures from Max, D&M contributor and DLP Welcome webmaster. For pictures of the inside queue, see the previous article below.

A small “private” cast-members-only inauguration of Hyperspace Mountain also happened on May 5th.

Reviews about the ride are mixed. In general people like this Hyperspace Mountain version, may be because it brings something new at DLP, but others are saying that the show is better at DL or HKDL and that a lot of the ride, here at DLP, is in the dark. The thing that everybody like is - no surprise - the addition of John Williams Star Wars music.

According to Max, DLP Hyperspace Mountain is fun, it’s cool, but is not "Wow" as Disney likes to hear it. For connoisseurs of « Space Mountain: Mission 2 », the upgrade in « Hypersapce Mountain » poses problem and the recycling can be noticed. For example the projections of the spaceships are distorded because the projection screens have not been reviewed on the asteroids. All the installations for existing projections were re-used, and only « laser » effects have been created with new lights installations. The effect of this Star Wars Hyperspace Mountain is finally no "Wow" because installations are the same and we have no major surprises. The final effect of « light speed » uses only half of the Red vortex of « Space Mountain: Mission 2 », which offers a very short effect in regards of the speed of the train and don't allow visitors to really enjoy it. Thus, our « Hyperspace Mountain », offers an experience that, for the visitor knowing well Disneyland Paris has few surprises. Why ? Because Space Mountain at Disneyland Paris already had during the ride a theming who is unique and dense and a much more epic track unlike the others Space Mountain in the world. So, to renew itself with a temporary version becomes difficult for Disneyland Paris with a number of possibilities reduced. But with the new trains, the music, the effects, and a new adventure, it allows the visitors to live a unique, interesting and exciting experience during a visit to Disneyland Paris. And for occasional or first visitors, this attraction is for you a must in your visit as well as the new version of Star Tours.

It should be noted that in parallel with the opening of « Hyperspace Mountain », at the Discoverylad Theater « Star Wars : Path of the Jedi » made also his debut on May 7 with a film about 15 minutes long which allows to re-live the cults sequences and what makes Star Wars such mythical films. This new projection is perfect for relaxing but also for fans of this Galaxy very far away.

Talking about Star Wars, you can re-experience the original and now extinct Star Tours ride in this amazing 360-Degree Video as Gregory Noacco - who did last year the awesome recreation of DLP Space Mountain original ride - has recently made his 4K recreation of the original Star Tours available as a 360-degree YouTube video, and it’s a delightful blast from the past.
Important: Watch the video using Chrome or Firefox as 360° videos don't work on Safari.

Disneyland Paris Update : Star Tours : The Adventure Continues Open at Disneyland Paris - Full Pictorial Report With Pictures and Video !

Disneyland Paris "new" Star Tours is now in soft-opening mode and will open officially on March 26. Thanks to Max, D&M contributor and DLPWelcome webmaster D&M has a full report for you with dozens of pictures and video! I also add to this article others great pictures from our friends of ED92 and i thanks both a lot for their pictorial materials! Here weeee go!

After Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort in 2011, then Tokyo Disney Resort in 2013, in 2017 Disneyland Paris open this legendary attraction in its new version. All the area has been redesigned with a new entrance inspired from the logo of the attraction. The X-Wing has landed on a platform above the new SW meet and greet area with Darth Vader , Chewbacca and others SW characters ( the location was previously the one of "Star Traders" shop), access to the new FastPass terminals has been revised, the area has a new floor too and the Star Trader shop has been moved at the exit of the ride, where was before the post-show area.

Yesterday, too, Discoveryland Station reopened and guests can now take the train again in this station ...also a great place too to shoot pictures of the new Star Tours area!

Okay, let's get inside, would we? ...as the pre-show decor has been changed and enhanced with new effects, screens, droids robots and lights with a new style given to the ride storyline.

Visible in the queue pre-show decor, "REX" the driver who did more than 3 250 000 flights from Disneyland Paris during 24 years is also present with others droids.

The experience : after the queue and taking the glasses 3D, when boarding, it’s time to seat in one of the 1000 StarSpeeders seats with a new driver, C-3PO. Let's say it, to see -3PO appearing in front of our eyes makes each time the same effect: a big smile and the feeling that the attraction is already a success. With more than 70 possible different travels, this attraction became a real "must" . With Kashyyyk, Jakku, Naboo, Hoth, Tatooine, and others, each trip has its random twists and provide a unique experience at each take-off.

The simulator : this is THE big change ! Between an interior with new colors and lighting, a HD 3D projection, and also more smooth movements, the simulators have been updated for our biggest pleasure!

Time to embark, and on the video below filmed by Max, not only you'll see all this great new queue decor but also one of the ride movies! Warning: spoilers ahead!

After the landing of the StarSpeeder 1000, guests are invited to discover the new "Star Traders" shop ( previously "SpacePort" with the Arcade Games ) where is parked a StarSpeeder, and is visible some passage of droids and a Jedi Training droid as a hologram on the big screen. Guests can buy Star Wars products as well as exclusive merchandise of the attraction.

It's at night that the new Star Tours area becomes even more magical thanks to the lighting of WDI wizards!

Editing: I'm adding a new video filmed by Curious Axel who was the first guest to enter the soft-openings of Star Tours: the Adventure Continues, and he filmed his long walkthrough inside the new decor. Video from our friends of ED92.

With this redesigned Star Tours area, the new version of the ride, the upcoming Hyperspace Mountain opening early May, and the Jedi Academy at Videopolis Disneyland Paris has now a mini-Star Wars land which, with the addition of the seasonal Star Wars projection show at the Walt Disney Studios , will be for sure helpful to bring back guests in the parks. All what is missing now is that DLP organize Star Wars week-ends to bring at DLP the dozens of thousands of European Star Wars fans. It's even surprising that they didn't thought about it yet...

Don't go away as we're not done yet with DLP Discoveryland as there is more to see with the Discoveryland fountains located at the entrance which are back working again with gorgeous lighting! This is more important than it may seem as it means that visually, and especially at night, Discoveryland will "start" right from Central Plaza instead than when you arrive up to the Constellations shop.

And... that's it for today's Disneyland Paris update! I want to thanks again Max from DLP Welcome and our friends from ED92 for their precious help and their great pictures! Make sure to visit their site and Facebook page for more DLP pictures and videos! A new DlP update will come soon and in the meantime, i remind you that the gorgeous Disneyland Paris book is still available and it's the last copies of a book that will not be reprinted so make sure to order your copy now!

The DLP book is at 78€ for the English regular edition and 100€ for the last copies of the French Collector's edition. Additional shipping worldwide for both editions is 19€, except for Belgium or Italy for which it is 29€.

Paypal payment of the amount - including shipping - can be sent directly to: neverlandeditions@gmail.com OR by using the Paypal buttons below.
